WAIAKEA 2 – KS-HAWAI‘I 1
Waiakea High’s girls soccer team got back to winning, overcoming a first-half deficit to edge Kamehameha Schools – Hawai‘i 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Ken Yamase Memorial Stadium in Hilo.
The victory helped WHS avoid entering a skid, as the Warriors lost their preivous matchup last week 2-0 to BIIF Div.-I rival Hilo. Prior to that match, WHS was undefeated at 8-0 and hadn’t surrendered any goals.
During Wednesday’s match, Waiakea was put on its heels when KSH’s Mia Chow scored a goal early in the first half.
WHS stayed strong, and scored twice in the second half while shutting KSH out. Waiakea’s goals came courtesy of Charlie Silva and Kau‘ionalani Mahi-Murray.
Now 9-1-0, Waiakea will end its season with a rematch against Hilo — kicking off at 2 p.m. today just up the street from WHS at the UH-Hilo soccer field.
Despite last week’s loss to the Vikings, the Warriors are in still in contention for the No. 1 seed in next week’s BIIF DI playoffs.
WHS will need to beat Hilo by a greater margin than 2-0, and hope to have more points than Hilo in the standings.
At 9-0-1, the Vikings have also been titans in the BIIF — all nine of their wins this season being shutouts.
If there are ties in the standings, a play-in match will be held Saturday. The BIIF DI and DII girls soccer playoff semifinals are slated for Monday at the high seed.
Wednesday’s match was KSH’s last of the regular season, as the Warriors finish off 4-1-3. KSH leads the BIIF DII standings with 15 points, ahead of Hawaii Prep (4-3-0) with 12 points.
The Warriors and Ka Makani last played each other in early December, and KSH won 1-0. The pair will likely meet again in the BIIF DII championship.

PARKER 6 – MAKUA LANI 0
Parker Schools’ boys soccer team handled Makua Lani at home, beating the Lions 6-0 on Wednesday at home for its first win on the season.
West Hawaii Today and Hawaii Tribune-Herald were unable to obtain the top scorers by Thursday afternoon, Jan, 18.
Parker (1-5-1) will next host Kealakehe at 4 p.m. Saturday in Waimea. The Lions (0-8-0) will forfeit Saturday’s match at KS-Hawai‘i.
